I feel like I haven’t had a proper day off in forever, and now that I have, I feel out of sorts. Figures.
Today feels like a Monday, even though it is very much Tuesday. I took the day off yesterday—like, was off my phone, didn’t answer emails, check fb messages, the works—and now that I’m “back,” it feels like I haven’t been at work for a whole week, but I’m not really complaining.
Working in social media is a lot like being on call 24/7, because it never really stops, even if you’re only supposed to be on the clock from 9-5. Keeping my work life and everyday life separate, especially because I’m a freelancer and someone who works in social media hasn’t been easy. With phones being a direct line to your life and work, how can you possibly separate the two, right?
In the last few months, I’ve implemented a “no emails past 7pm” rule, and that’s been great, but it doesn’t really stop me from checking various clients’ Instagram/FB/etc. accounts. Yesterday was a really rare occasion, in that I checked nothing all day—not even my personal social media accounts (at least, I checked it a lot less than usual), and I’ve got to say, it was GLORIOUS. I think I’m going to try to have a social media-free day at least once a month from now on. It really does help reset the brain.
Trying to find a good work/life balance is something I’m still trying to figure out, but I feel like yesterday was a great baby step! How do you balance home life and work life?
